Thoughts on the Gospel

‘The author of these passages proposed a list of signs for the end of the world and general witness to those who went out to preach. At the root of both lay the Lord’s command to “Go and preach the Good News.” ‘The author began with order for travelling evangelization. “Go everywhere and preach the Good News to everyone,” mirrored Jesus’ own mobile ministry. The disciples were to do as Jesus did, but only on a universal scale. In fact, the ministry of Jesus became THE sign of the end times. Instead of judgment, the power of God’s Word would be revealed. The Good News would be proclaimed. And evil would be rejected. Those who accepted God’s Word would be saved (i.e., they would participate in these signs of the end times). But those who rejected God’s Word (who refused to accept the Good News and its accompanying signs) were lost. ‘Mark 16:17-18 described fives signs of the end times, all done in the name of Jesus. They were: Expelling demons, speaking new things in tongues, picking up snakes (serpents), not being harmed if poison is drunk and healing the weak.
Guardians of Our Brothers and sisters

‘Today, the Lord’s voice summons all of us to be concerned for one another. Even today God asks us to be “guardians” of our brothers and sisters (Gen 4:9), to establish relationships based on mutual consideration and attentiveness to the well-being, the integral well-being of others. The great commandment of love for one another demands that we acknowledge our responsibility towards those who, like ourselves, are creatures and children of God. ‘Pope Paul VI stated that the world today is suffering above all from a lack of brotherhood: “Human society is sorely ill. The cause is not so much the depletion of natural resources, nor their monopolistic control by a privileged few; it is rather the weakening of brotherly ties between individuals and nations.”’ Pope Benedict XVI, Message for Lent, 2012

Seasons in the Liturgical Calendar

‘There are four main seasons in the liturgical calendar: Advent which covers the four Sundays before Christmas. In Advent Catholics prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth and anticipate his coming again at the end of time. Christmas, this season celebrates Christ’s birth and remembers the visits by both the shepherds and the wise men to the holy family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Christmas season runs from the 25th of December to the feast of the Baptism of the Lord on the Sunday after the 6th of January.

‘Lent covers the six weeks of preparation for the celebration of Easter and begins on Ash Wednesday and finishes on the evening of Holy Thursday. The season of Easter is the heart of the liturgical calendar. It begins with the Easter Triduum, which is celebrated as one liturgical event spread over three days from the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday to the eve of Easter Sunday.’

From Hearing God’s Call, Session 22, Catholic Enquiry Centre

Ascension Quote

‘Moses brought out of Egypt a timid nation, and in the space of forty years trained it to be full of valour for the task of conquering the promised land; Christ in forty days trains his apostles to be bold and patient instead of cowards. They mourned and wept at the beginning of the season, but at the end they are full of courage for the good fight; their spirits mount high with their Lord, and when he is received out of their sight, and their own trial begins, they return to Jerusalem with great joy, and are continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.’

Thoughts on the Gospel

‘What is the cost of love? When we frame love in this question, the subject transcends the feeling. No longer does love remain in the realm of the heart. It becomes a decision of the will. The question implies that we do not truly love unless we are willing to act upon our feelings and live with the consequences. Love may not be love without an inner emotion, but it cannot survive without action. And it cannot grow without testing. ‘To claim love is easy, to live love is difficult. Yet, in Jesus, we find the example of love perfectly lived out. We also find the power to live love to the fullest. These passages continue Jesus’ speech to his followers at the Last Supper. Just as Jesus stressed intimacy in the vine and branches analogy last week, here Jesus focused upon the means of intimacy: love. To live out God’s love meant care for others. When one truly loved God, he or she was raised to the status of God’s friend. Even in their barest form, we modern Christian readers immediately latch onto these passages. As long as we strive to love God, he will return love and fill us with joy. God will empower us to love others, as well. Awash in the glow of love’s overwhelming power, it seems we can possess a happy disposition for the rest of life. Love will sustain us. ‘Of course, Jesus did not mean these passages for his follower’s comfort. Jesus used the passages to challenge his disciples. In the culture of Jesus’ time, status and reputation stood above accomplishment. It did not matter what someone did. What others said about him did matter. If someone did engage in activity, his efforts were only meant for self-glorification. Through the eyes of many Jews, God blessed his faithful with economic abundance, natural ability, and impeccable reputation. The poor, the lame, and the sinner were to be shamed and avoided.

The Liturgical Calendar

‘The idea of dividing the year up in different ways is something that most of us can relate to. In the tropical regions people talk of a dry season and a wet season. In more temperate climates the labels summer, autumn, winter and spring are used to divide the year. For others the beginning of football season or the first cricket test match mark the beginning of a timeframe that is important to them. During the course of each and every year Catholics use a liturgical or worship calendar to bring to mind past events and people. The liturgical calendar assists Catholics in keeping the mystery of faith alive as they look forward to Christ’s return in glory at the end of time illness.’

In John’s passage on the vine and the branches, Jesus presented the themes of testing and judgment, intimacy, and assurance of God’s benevolent providence. Jesus seemed to say, ‘No matter what happens, stay close to me, produce the fruit of a good Christian life, and my Father will take care of you.’ The theme of mutual fidelity threaded its way throughout this passage. Chapter 15 in John’s gospel stood as the last monologue of Jesus before his death (his testing). Jesus gave this extended speech to his followers at the Last Supper. In context, Jesus looked back at the times with his followers. And he tried to reassure them in the face of the coming test at the Garden of Gethsemane. Many followers had left him because of his teachings. And many would leave him. Those who remained true to him would be stronger in their faith.

Thoughts on the Gospel

In this Sunday’s passages, John presented Jesus as the dedicated shepherd. Like the shepherd, Jesus would lead even if it meant his death. He would not be a charlatan who gave a performance of holiness for his audience, only to flee at any sign of danger. His leadership bound the follower to himself in intimacy. And his Father loved him for the sacrifice he would make for his sheep and for power he would use to rise up from the dead. What defined true Christian leadership? In this passage, Jesus pointed to himself as the model. He was willing to put himself in harm’s way for his followers. Jesus exemplified a highly esteemed cultural value for his time: loyalty. His loyalty would extend to his own death. Any follower who desired leadership in the Christian community should be willing to face the same fate. They must be loyal to the Lord and his followers, no matter the cost. Unlike the loyal leader, the hireling played to the audience, but fled at the sight of any danger. Jesus inferred leadership would be tested. Indeed, any who aspired to leadership must be willing to be tested. With testing came disappointment and the possibility of disillusionment. After all, to walk in the footsteps of the Master meant a journey to the cross. The entire journey would bring joy and pain – sometimes on a day by day basis.

Communion Antiphon:

“The Good Shepherd is risen! He who laid down his life for his sheep, who died for his flock, he is risen, alleluia.”

ST LOUIS CATHOLIC CHURCH CENTENARY CELEBRATION

Boyanup, WA

We are happy to announce that we now have a committee for the Centenary celebration of Boyanup Church this coming 9th of February 2013. Planning of activities and the Pontifical mass will be discussed as the group meets sometime this month. We would like to ask those who have old photos of their family in Boyanup church to lend us their photos for the exhibit as part of the program. Remember, we are all in this together and as a parish, we will celebrate this wonderful gift of faith from God to our community. Thank you and God bless!

The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer serves as the pattern for all Christian prayer. It holds a creative tension:

• God, who is in heaven, with the image of God as father,

• the need for our daily bread now while working and praying for the kingdom to come,

• the practical response to the experience of divine forgiveness in forgiving those who trespass against us, and finally

• the hope that in the face of despair and meaninglessness we will remain steadfast in our faith until the end of our life.

We thank you for the Year of Grace, a time to start afresh from Christ. You invite us to contemplate the face of Jesus your Son, that we may experience a new wave of grace,
and that the light of Christ may burn more brightly in our lives.

Attune our hearts and minds
to the presence of your Holy Spirit,
that our Church may be transformed, our relationships be healed, and our nation grow in compassion and justice.

With the intercession of St Mary MacKillop, who showed us new ways of living the Gospel, we make our prayer
through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us.

Thoughts on the Gospel—From fear and alarm to peace

‘All of a sudden there is Jesus among them. The disciples’ first reaction, however, is one of fear and alarm. Jesus is dead and so this must be his ghost. But Jesus reassures them: he points to the solidity of his body. Now their feelings turn to inexpressible joy. As they look on him with a mixture of happiness and wonder, he pushes them a bit further and asks for food to eat. Ghosts don’t eat. Jesus is truly risen. ‘He now explained how what had happened to him was all foretold clearly in the Scriptures. It was all part of God’s plan. This is put in other words in the First Letter of John today: “Jesus is the sacrifice that takes our sins away, and not only ours, but the whole world’s.” ‘And then comes their mission and mandate: “You are witnesses to this.” All round us there are people who have never heard the message at all. They all need to hear that greeting: “Peace with you” and to experience the peace that only Jesus can give. Will I be the one to carry that message today to even one other person? If we all did just that, we would reach a very large number of people.’

—- Excerpt from a commentary by Fr Frank Doyle SJ

Communion Antiphon:

“Christ had to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day. In his name penance for the remission of sins is to be preached to all nations, alleluia.”

An Easter Prayer

Dear God, Thank you for blessing us with this wonderful term. We have learnt plenty and had lots of fun in the process. Thank you for all the new friendships we have made and thank you for helping us be kind and loving to one another. May you keep us safe throughout the Easter holiday and help us remember that Jesus gave his life so we could live. Thank you God for everything you have done for us. Amen.

Heaven, Earth, and God’s Creation

Heaven and earth are united deep within God’s creation. Earth is not heaven and heaven is not earth but, in Christ, heaven and earth are intimately united to each other. Earth is the world of men and women and every living creature. Heaven is the dwelling place of God, angels and saints, including Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus.

‘What difference does the resurrection make for us? It is not just the resurrection of a single individual. St John emphasises that the only way we can understand the Resurrection is to place it in the context of God’s creation. Just as God breathed his spirit over the waters at the beginning of creation so now the risen Christ breathes upon this fearful group of failures. God is acting again; it is a new creation. ‘The disciples receive the very same spirit which Jesus possessed. The immediate effect of this gift is to recreate them as a new community, the Church. This new beginning is the work of the Holy Spirit. The disciples are forgiven, Jesus accepts them, without recrimination: all their failures are wiped out. And they are given the power to forgive others, ‘whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven’. ‘The joy of the Resurrection opens their hearts, takes away their fear and prepares them to take the Gospel to the world as Jesus commands “As the Father sent me so I am sending you.”‘We are sent to continue Jesus’ saving work of healing the world and to live in hope of its final consummation in glory. In so far as we live out this faith in Jesus’s Resurrection then will the words of St John come true: “This is the victory over the world – our faith.” (1 John 5:1-6)’ Excerpts from a homily by Fr David Sanders OP

Thoughts on the Gospel

‘The Resurrection of Jesus is the sudden declaration by God that we are someone and never just something. Perhaps this is why Peter is mentioned explicitly by name — that he who is branded with failure may know the taste of a new beginning. ‘From this moment onwards, to be a disciple of Jesus is to be seized by the belief that there is something utterly irreducible about human life and experience. This is why the first Christians so joyfully go to the sword and the stone. Whatever force or violence may tear them apart, they are someone, they are not simply instruments of the State, or the petty gods of nature, subject to the cruelty or the purposes of those around them. ‘When Pompey marched into the Holy of Holies at the centre of the Temple he expected to find an extravagant image of a god which he could cart away with him. Instead he found nothing but an empty space, an absence of images. ‘But the empty tomb, like the empty Temple, provides a new space for human beings to leave behind the false image of what they have become, and grow into the true nature which God has created for them.’

Communion Antiphon:

“Christ has become our paschal sacrifice; let us feast with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth, allelluia.”

A Response to the Gospel

‘Our Great Week, Holy Week, affords us opportunities to follow Jesus more closely, to stand by him in his suffering and death, and to consider how he suffers all of this for my sins and for my salvation.

‘In your daily 15 minutes this week be with Jesus. Ask Peter to stand with you. As you are with him notice your reactions. Do you pull back? Or do you draw nearer to Jesus, whom everyone fled save his mother and beloved disciple? Do not be embarrassed. Above all don’t change any meaning – of Jesus, his passion or yours, or your imperfect discipleship.

‘Let Jesus be your Truth and resolve to love him more deeply and follow him more closely. Close by saying slowly the Lord’s Prayer, which reminds us to begin and to continue loving Jesus in each other and in those who offend us.’

— Excerpt from a commentary by Fr Paul Panaretos SJ

Communion Antiphon:

“Father, if this cup may not pass, but I must drink it, then your will be done.”

Thank you for my cousins and aunties and uncles. And my nanna and granddad. Thank you for my mum that helps me cook dinner.

My dear Lord Jesus, Son of God,

you were born in a stable and died on the cross for our salvation.
Say to your heavenly Father at the hour of my death: ‘Father, forgive

this child.’
Say to your loving mother, Mary: ‘Behold your daughter/your son.’
Say to my soul: ‘This day you shall be with me in Paradise.’
‘My God, my God, do not abandon me’ in that hour.
‘I thirst,’ my God! Yes, my soul thirsts for you, the fountain of living waters.
So, my Saviour, from this moment and for all eternity

‘Into your hands, I commend my spirit.’

Lord Jesus, receive my soul. Amen.
