Thoughts on the Gospel

Taxes were an incendiary issue during the lifetime of Jesus. The Roman Empire imposed a head tax on the population of Judea, Samaria and Idumea, and conducted a census to enforce it. Around A.D. 6, when Jesus was still young, Judas the Galilean led a revolt against the census, which was ruthlessly re- pressed by the Romans (Acts 5:37-38). The Pharisees, who resented the Roman occupation of the pure land of Israel, were against the tax, while the Herodians supported it. Together they are setting a trap for Jesus. He is faced with being either a collaborator or an insurrectionist. „By answering, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar,” Jesus narrows his response to only the census tax and embodies his rejection of violence as a way of dealing with oppressive situations. „The three disputes of Jesus in Matthew 22 culminate in the greatest commandments about loving God with one’s whole heart, mind and soul, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself (next Sunday’s Gospel). Hu- mans, not coins, bear God’s true image, and no edict of Caesar can absolve Jesus‟ followers from this mandate to love God and see God in the neighbor.‟ Excerpt from a commentary by Fr John Donahue SJ

Feast Days of the Week

Monday 17 Oct St Ignatius of Antioch c.AD 50 – c.AD 110

Ignatius was a convert and a disciple of St John the Evangelist. St Peter appointed

him Bishop of Antioch, which diocese he governed for forty years. Arrested in the reign of Emperor Trajan he was taken in chains to Rome and devoured by lions. He ended his saintly life exclaiming, „May I become agreeable bread to the Lord.‟

Thoughts on the Gospel

‘It is easy to think that being a Catholic means being concerned with the relation- ship between God and me, that my duty is to “save my soul”. But, in fact, the only way to “save my soul” is by becoming a truly loving and caring person as part of a loving and caring community of people united in Christ. And sometimes that car- ing may involve bringing the brother/sister face to face with the loving demands of the Gospel. We do not help each other by turning a blind eye to behaviour which is clearly unchristian. ‘As a community we have a responsibility for each other’s well- being. We do not further the witness of a loving community when we, in false“charity”, ignore social problems such as drug-taking, alcoholism, compulsive gam- bling, violence in the home, discrimination against the physically and mentally handicapped, racial exploitation and the like taking place in our parish community. It is not enough just to deal with these things in the privacy of “Confession” for, ulti- mately, reconciliation must be at the community level. And, as such, this is the re- sponsibility of the community exercising its calling as the Body of Christ.

Excerpt from a homily by Fr Frank Doyle SJ

Feast Days of the Week

Thur Sep 8Birth of the Virgin Mary

The Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been celebrated in the Church at least since the 8th Century. The birth of Mary was miraculous – she was con- ceived without sin as a special grace because God had selected her to become the mother of His Son.

There is nothing contained in Scripture about the birth of Mary or her parentage, though Joseph’s lineage is given in the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. In celebrating the nativity of Mary, Christians anticipate the Incarnation and birth of her Divine Son, and give honor to the mother of Our Lord and Savior.

The self that is lost is the autonomous individual so dear to modern consciousness. The self found is true life in a community of brothers and sisters who take up the challenge of discipleship by speaking and liv- ing from that fire that burns within their hearts.

„Such discipleship embodies a life of “costly grace,” as described by Dietrich Bon- hoeffer, who carried his cross to death in opposing Nazism. He describes costly grace as “the Gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for…such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs him his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life.” Peter, firm rock and stumbling stone, learned this only after he failed and even denied Jesus.‟

Fearful of his great power with the people, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned when John denounced his adulterous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother Philip.
Thoughts on the Gospel

‘The Pebble That Became a Rock. Some people have claimed that Jesus did not have a sense of humour because he is never shown laughing in the Bible. Actually, he told many jokes. They were puns, but these do not survive language translation. One of his best known witticisms is found in today’s Gospel.

‘The Old Testament referred to a mysterious figure called “One like a Son of Man” This was synonym for “human-appearing”. He would bring help from God. Jesus asks his apostles about current speculation on the figure’s identity. The disciples give the most common guesses. Jesus then quizzes them why they haven’t added his own person to the list. Only Simon Bar (son of) Jonah gets the point. He blurts out that Jesus must be the mystery man, the Messiah.

‘”Simon” means “pebble” in Hebrew. “Cephas” (or Peter) means “rock”. Jesus makes a double pun. He says that the little pebble is going to be a big rock in his scheme of things.’

Excerpt from a commentary by Fr Richard Lonsdale

Feast Days of the Week

Monday Aug 22 Queenship of Mary

The words of Pius XII well describe the Queenship of Mary: ‘Jesus, the Son of God, reflects on His heavenly Mother the glory, the majesty and the dominion of His kingship, for, having been associated to the King of Martyrs in the unspeakable work of human Redemption as Mother and co-operator, she remains forever associated to Him, with a practically unlimited power, in the distribution of the graces which flow from the Redemption. Jesus is King throughout all eternity by nature and by right of conquest: through Him, with Him, and subordinate to Him, Mary is Queen by grace, by divine relationship, by right of conquest, and by singular choice *of the Father+. And her kingdom is as vast as that of her Son and God, since nothing is excluded from her dominion.

About 50 parishioners joined more than 200 others at New Norcia on Saturday 7th March at the Blessing of Abbot John Herbert osb as the Seventh Abbot of Holy Trinity Abbey, New Norcia. Abbot John was the previous Parish Priest of Dardanup, one more connection in the continuing Benedictine thread which runs through the parish’s long history. None other than Bishop Salvado himself, then acting Bishop of Perth and New Norcia’s great Founder, laid the foundation stone of the Dardanup church on 25th March 1854 – the first parish church outside Perth. Bishop Salvado personally laid 25 upon the Foundation Stone. When Bishop Serra osb returned to Perth he created the new parish of Dardanup, on 10th December 1855, and the first Parish Priest was also a Benedictine, Fr Peter Aragon osb. Another monk, Dom V Garrido osb succeeded Dom Peter, and was Parish Priest until July 1858. It was he, who as Delegate of Bishop Serra, blessed and opened the new church 19th April 1857.

Fr John Herbert became Parish Priest at Bishop Holohan’s invitation in 2005, and the enthusiastic response of the parish to his election as Abbot of his Monastery was made very visible on Saturday when so many made the journey to celebrate the Mass with him and so many friends, to witness his Abbatial Blessing by Archbishop Hickey, and join in the celebrations. It was a most joyful and memorable occasion. The parish community left Abbot John with a new Coffee Machine for the community – having heard his disappointment that it was very difficult to get a good cup of coffee in New Norcia! Our prayers accompany him on his new journey with his fellow monks, and all associated with the great Abbey.

The recent parish mission to Mt Magnet has been a most successful form of outreach for the parish both in terms of the support provided to that community as well as the community spirit engendered by the venture within those who travelled and those who supported the trip financially and with other resources. A total of 22 people travelled to Mt Magnet, including the Bertola, Italiano and Starr families, Marek & Krystyna Golinski, Nick & Damian Maher and Fr Michael.

The first stop for the families was at New Norcia on Sunday where we were hosted by the Benedictine Community and accommodated in the former convent building which proved to be a fantastic stop-over for us all. As well as seeing some of the town, we participated in Vespers in the Abbey Church, shared a dinner afterwards with Fr John Herbert and were taken on a tour through St Gertrude’s and the New Norcia library – which was a fascinating experience looking through their ancient books, one dating from the early 1500’s, just a few years after the Guttenberg Press was invented!

An early departure ensued on Monday and we arrived in Mt Magnet at about 1.30pm where a welcoming committee of local parishioners were pleased to see us. Sisters Gerri and Maree had requested help to renovate the church pews, to release the church windows which had been painted shut and to re-hang the crucifix in the Sanctuary. We quickly set about making a start on the pews, which proved a somewhat tedious task initially with years of accumulated grime being physically scraped off by hand with chisels.

Accommodation for the majority of us was at Boogardie Station, owned by the Jones family since 1883. The shearing quarters had a real outback feel to them which some of the children took a bit of getting used to – particularly the swallows which nested throughout the sleeping quarters.

Tuesday was a full day of work although with some pooled chemistry knowledge a much more efficient manner of cleaning the pews was devised. Cloudy ammonia turned the grime on the pews to a soapy solution which was then easily removed with wet sponges. This discovery improved our rate of progress, although with the supply of cloudy ammonia in the whole of Mt Magnet limited to 3 bottles, we would be somewhat constrained in the number of pews that we could get through. The children provided occasional support with cleaning and sanding back the pews, but their major focus was the production of a large banner which was to be donated to the Mt Magnet Church. Prior to leaving Dardanup, Leanne Depiazzi had put together the basic outline of material across the banner while Kirsten and Sarah provided a lot of patient guidance to the children to help decorate it with
painted hand prints and embroidered wild flowers. It was finished just in time for the Mass celebrated
on Wednesday.

Tuesday evening was a very jovial night back at Boogardie Station with a shared BBQ dinner and folksongs afterwards very ably led by Nick, Damian and Gabrielle. Wednesday saw a concerted effortto complete the varnishing of the cleaned and sanded pews, with about eight being completed – they came up a treat. Most of the church windows were unstuck- a very welcome relief for the summer months, and the crucifix was put back in the Sanctuary.

A Mass was celebrated at midday with a number of local parishioners attending, and who were impressed with what had been achieved in the church over the past couple of days. A lunch followed which helped foster further links between the two communities. Some of the local kids had not seen so many children attending Mass in their parish before. Ostrich eggs from Tony & Julie Van- derloop were presented to the Mt Magnet community during Mass as a gift from our community. We later on received two emu eggs in exchange – perhaps symbolic of a long and productive relationship between the two parishes.

An earlier finish to work on Wednesday enabled us to take advantage of a tour of the attractions of Boogardie Station with the Jones family taking us out to a see a wedgetail eagle nest complete with resident chick, and then further on to Warroan Rock where we climbed the rock for a spectacular view of the surrounds followed by a bonfire and bush BBQ afterwards.

Thursday saw everyone packing for an early departure, although Marek& Krystyna were determined to finish applying the last coat of varnish to the pews, which they did with assistance from the Bertolas. By lunchtime, all that we had started had been completed. There were several pews remaining still needing to be renovated – perhaps during a trip next year, but in the main, the parish had sufficient finished pews to cater for their congregation.

On behalf of those who travelled, we would like to thank everyone in the parish who has supported this venture with donations of funds to cover fuel, loans of tools and other equipment and also to Brian Wells who prefabricated dressed jarrah supports which were fixed to the pews to restore their rigidity.

Our thanks too to Sisters Gerri and Maree who couldn’t do enough for us while we were in Mt Magnet, to the Jones family for their generous hospitality at Boogardie and to Fr John Herbert and the Benedictine Community who accommodated us during this trip as well as the earlier reconnaissance visit. Thanks also to Fr Michael for his enthusiastic support and continued encouragement of those making this mission.

From the travelling parishioners.
